I’ve had a rocky ride with Weezer for the past 15 years or so. The thrilling highs, the befuddling lows, and their uncanny ability to do the very thing you least expect them to do at every turn.
Well, they have topped themselves AGAIN, which is staggering after the dog-jumping-across-the-living-room cover of Raditude, and the fact that Rainn Wilson named their last album, and that he named it Raditude, and that Lil Wayne was on the album in a song that Jermaine Dupri co-wrote. Forget all that. The new album is called Hurley (you know, the guy from LOST?), and the album cover is a big, glorious photo of actor Jorge Garcia’s face.
If that’s not mind-boggling enough for you, the lead single, “Memories”, is actually pretty satisfying. Loud, sloppy guitars, scratchy, shouted, emoted vocals, and a searing synthy hook that hearkens back to early b-side “You Gave Your Love to Me Softly.”
You never know what awaits you just around the corner with Weezer, but for now, rejoice in the fact that all the news is great news.
